Dry Eye Treatments

Oculus K-5

Tears are more complex than most people realize.  There are three layers to the tear film and each layer comes from a different gland.  The Oculus K-5 not only allows us to determine if there is an underlying dry eye issue and, if so, which of the three gland(s) is the underlying problem.  Knowing the underlying cause of a patient’s dry eye allows us to prescribe more specific, beneficial treatments.

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs are tiny plugs – about the size of a grain of rice – that are inserted into the tear ducts of the eyelid to prevent tears from draining out of the eyes. The plugs force the liquid from tears to remain in the eyes, increasing the natural tear film and lubricating the cornea of the eye.

MiBo Thermoflo

The MiBo Thermoflo supplies continuous controlled heat that is applied to the outer skin of the eyelids along with ultrasound gel for a gentle massage. The heat is absorbed deep into the tissue and breaks down the hardened lipids in the meibomian glands.

TearLab

The TearLab Osmolarity System measures the osmolarity of human tears to aid in the diagnosis of dry eye disease in patients suspected of having dry eye disease, in conjunction with other methods of clinical evaluation.

Eyesuvis

In a clinical trial program with 2871 patients with dry eye, patients using EYSUVIS showed significant reduction in the symptoms of dry eye (ocular discomfort) as early as Day 4 after starting treatment (versus placebo). Symptoms continued to improve up to the end of the treatment period (Day 15). Patients taking EYSUVIS also showed significant reduction in signs of dry eye (eye redness) at Day 15 versus placebo.

BlephEx

BlephEx is a painless in-office procedure performed by Dr. Murray. A revolutionary new handpiece is used to very precisely spin a soft medical grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes. This procedure effectively removes years of accumulated bacterial biofilm, much like a dental cleaning removes accumulated plaque, also a biofilm. Once the biofilm is removed, your eyelids are cleaner and healthier. A healthy eyelid is critical for normal tear production.

Meibomian Gland Probing

Obstructed Meibomian Glands is possibly the most common cause of Dry Eye Disease. A new approach to treating obstructive Meibomian Glands involves opening the meibomian glandular orifice and duct directly. This technique, intraductal meibomian gland probing, often provides immediate patient relief.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral contact lenses can be used for severe dry eyes. The large diameter rigid lens vaults over the cornea trapping fluid between the back surface of the large contact lens and the front eye structures. We’ve had tremendous success with this treatment option.

Tyrvaya

There is no substitute for your own natural tear film. Artificial tears might make your eyes feel better temporarily, but they aren’t made up of the same components as your own natural tear film. Tyrvaya is a nasal spray that promotes natural tear production.

Autologous Serum Eye Drops

There is no substitute for your own natural tear film. Artificial tears might make your eyes feel better temporarily, but they aren’t made up of the same components as your own natural tear film. Tyrvaya is a nasal spray that promotes natural tear production.

InflammaDry Test

InflammaDry is the first and only, rapid result, in-office test that detects elevated levels of MMP-9, an inflammatory marker that is consistently elevated in the tears of patients with dry eye disease.

Xiidra

Xiidra is a prescription eye drop approved by the FDA to treat the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. Xiidra was specifically designed to target a source of inflammation that can cause dry eye disease.

Restasis for Chronic Dry Eye

Restasis was developed specifically to treat a type of Chronic Dry Eye with decreased tear production due to inflammation.  Restasis can help increase the eyes’ natural tear production with time and consistent use.  In a study, patients using Restasis saw an increase in tear production at 6 months.  Individual results may vary.
